I'm definitely not trying to crap on anyone's day and I don't want any pity, but I just want to let those of you who also have "complicated" relationships with your fathers know that you aren't alone. If your father hasn't exactly been a positive influence in your life don't let it define you, instead become a stronger person in spite of him.
For years Father's Day has been kind of a rough day for me, but this year is a little different. A couple of months back my brother and his wife had their first child. Seeing him be everything my father wasn't inspires me. I've also realized that not having an active father figure around probably helped lead me to the Army and made me who I am today. I'm not perfect, but I think at the very least I'm doing my best to make a positive impact in the world.
