This is one of my favorite movie themes. I watched a background on the movie that actually documented what went on. When Eric Liddell refused to race on Sunday every one was mad at him including the Olympic officials . The track officials gave Liddell the outside lane. Liddell had no way of knowing what was going on in back of him. Liddell put the hammer down and ran the 400 at a 100 meter pace. The other protagonist in the story disliked waiting.. He dreaded waiting for a race to start. He compared it to waiting to be put in front of a firing squad.
