Today's birthday: Born June 20, 1924, in Luttrell, TN, Chet Akins played the guitar as a child and as a teen performed professionally as a fiddler. By the late 1940s he had become a sought-after session guitarist. Thank you for mentioning and honoring Chet Akins SGT John " Mac " McConnell, He has been an extraordinary session guitarist and guitarist on his own since the days before synthesized sound effects were so easy to make. He is a truly great guitarist.

One of my favorites, a guitar picker who mastered his instrument before he mastered the art of performing. I well remember watching him on the Jimmy Dean show. He'd be hunkered over his guitar picking out incredible melodies (he even combined two simultaneously and you could discern both). However, someone off camera had to keep prompting him to look up occasionally (so he could connect to the audience). He'd glance up with a myopic, surprised look, grin momentarily, then go back to concentrating on his playing. Damn, he was good though...
