CPO Tim Dickey Look at the money that the USSR poured into their military during the Cold War. I think of China continues on this path there could be a similar time in our near future that we are in a Cold War II with China. Like the USSR they could be headed for the same collapse in government when the people of China who suffer from human rights aggression and those in the por parts of the country wanting to earn a living for themselves, and yes capitalism continues to eat at the very fiber of the communist party they may crumble like the USSR. Just an opinon and something to think about. I could be way off base too!

Before the USSR collapsed, I remember hearing how they were spending (and correct me if I'm wrong) something like 20-30% of real GDP on defense, which is absolutely ludicrous.

That is very interest CPO Tim Dickey that China has raised it 2016 military budget by 7.6 percent. I wonder how much of that raise is based upon its economy and how much of it based on potential future earnings based on petroleum and natural gas deposits in the South China sea which China is doing its best to control.

I think they are hedging on resource discoveries in the South China Sea LTC Stephen F.. Their energy dependence is a major issue and they have to secure alternate sources in order to grow their economy.

CPO Tim Dickey China's President has said there are three main goals for its military diplomacy — deterrence, agenda-setting, and reassurance — it’s the last that has proved least successful thus far. China’s military interactions with other countries tend to cause an even more skeptical analysis of China's military's intent to have peaceful interactions with the rest of the world.

I like the point that LTC Stephen F. brought up about energy. I always refer back to "Unrestricted Warfare" written a number of years ago by two PLA COL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrestricted_Warfare). It's work looking at CPT (Join to see) to see how this all plays out over several decades.

CPO Tim Dickey - China has been doing two things in the direction energy (oil) that has been to their benefit. They have been exchanging debt owed to them by Venezuela and Iran for oil said another way Venezuela and Iran are paying their debt to China in barrels of oil instead of with money. With the recent decline in the price of oil how many barrels of oil to you expect that they would have received? $30 per barrel v. $130 barrel per barrel of oil. This is why there are so many Chinese products available in the Iranian market.
