I've been a fan of Top Gear on the BBC for many years (until it was recently shut down). I've always enjoyed how "the boys" on the show laughed at American cars until they went on a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Then they understood. American roads are nothing like European roads. American cars are built for American roads. We don't need cars with tight cornering ability. We don't need cars for narrow highways and byways like they have in Europe. You can't drive in America with a limited range and the need to stop for hours to recharge. So, yeah, we lag behind because electric cars lag far behind our needs.

Philosophically, no issues. It just needs to be a better overall value for me. When an electric car compares favorably to a gas vehicle on all of the aspects that I value (at the time I am making a purchasing decision), I will be happy to consider, but not until then.

Generally, when I look at a vehicle, I am looking at the following criteria (more is better, unless stated otherwise): Cost (purchase, less is better), Size, Acceleration, Comfort, Range, Ease of refueling (not something you traditionally think of, but need to when you throw electric into the mix), Refueling cost (ditto, less is better), Power, off-road ability.

That list is not necessarily in order, and the priority of each has changed at various times. I am relatively insensitive to refueling cost (I like and have driven trucks/suvs my entire adult life. I am acclimated to shelling out the $$$) right now. Off-road ability is fading in importance (I don't go 4 wheeling, just like having it available - the older I get, the less I care). I do a LOT of driving (My 97 Ranger that I just got rid of had over 300K miles on it, and was not my daily driver for the last 6 years). Right now, if I can't get into it and drive 2,000 miles with nothing more than bathroom breaks and an overnight or two at a random roadside hotel, it's not happening. Yes, I have driven from western WA to Milwaukee, WI on several occasions. I plan to do so again. It's a very real consideration for me.

Regulations aren't a bad thing, but when over-regulation puts barriers in front of the innovators... this is what will happen.
