Police spokesman Don Aaron said the usher of the church – identified as 22-year-old Robert Engle – confronted the gunman and was pistol-whipped, receiving a “significant injury to his head.” Samson was shot in the chest during his struggle with Engle.
Aaron said the church usher, who has a valid carry permit, then went out to his car and retrieved his own gun, holding it on the gunman until police arrived. Police described the 6-foot-5 Engle as “extraordinarily brave.”
CC permits are on the rise. Yet if you read closely it's interesting who was shot in the scuffle.

And diehard libs will say that guns don't belong in church. I will say that wearing a six-shooter on one's hip is a little too "wild west," but I'm grateful the good guy was packing, no matter where it was carried.

Agreed. Totally agree with the hip holster. But a good CC is always good. Vehicle is a great place if not too far.

Some churches are making their own security teams, some CCW, some unarmed. My church has an armed CCW security team lead by the pastor's son who is a police officer. We all carry within the church and most of us are licensed armed security.
It's sad that the church has to feel that they need to create such a guard within their walls like this.

I've quietly and very discreetly been packing my little S&W Model 36 for 45 years...in church, grocery store, JC Penney's, you name it. I always will. And good shot, Brother Engle!!!

With this church shooting, the blame won't that easy. Of course, it won't be the actual gunman's fault. Will it be religion, guns, Trump, the flag, a video....who knows.

From what I read, the 22-year-old usher (Mr. Engle) confronted the shooter unarmed. In the scuffle, he received a pistol-whipping, but caused the gunman to non-fatally shoot himself in the chest. With the gunman down and disarmed, the usher then dashed to his car to retrieve his pistol and returned, where he stood over the gunman until police arrived. I don't know what the church's policy on being armed within the building was (in Tennessee being armed in church is legal unless specifically prohibited by the church), or why the usher (who had a concealed carry permit) was unarmed when this went down.

It looks like there's a lot of confusion over exactly what happened in this confrontation between the usher and the criminal/radical/jihadist.
1 -- Why did the usher receive a 'pistol whipping' instead of being shot, as was the case with several others in the church who were not a threat in any way to the perp?
2 -- If the perp was shot in the chest -- and 'disarmed' -- in a struggle with the usher, why did the usher go to his car to get his pistol?
3 -- Who had the gun taken from the 'disarmed' perp? Did the usher fetch his pistol to add to the restraint of the already (presumably) guarded and wounded perp?
It looks like there will have to be some 'settling of the mud' before such matters are explained.
