So, we have all had our share of great things and not so great things as we have transitioned from active duty to civilian life. My husband was deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Storm with 44 guys from the former 633rd Security Police Squadron (now the 36th Security Forces Squadron) at Andersen AFB in Guam. Thankfully all of the guys returned alive, but many of them came back with some form of Gulf War Syndrome, PTSD, or a host of other illnesses that can be attributed to their time in the desert. One of those guys, Edward "Tom" Garey was recently diagnosed with ALS. What we have found out since his diagnosis is that persons deployed to the desert during Desert Shield/Storm are 60% more likely than the general public to be diagnosed with this terminal disease.
So, with that said, I am reaching out to my fellow Veterans and all members of RallyPoint to help us put together a reunion for those 44 guys so that they can be together before Tom's illness robs him of his mobility and speech. In addition, we are asking for additional help to fund Tom's bucket list. ALS is always fatal and the prognosis for life expectancy is 3-5 years.
There is more info about Tom and his family in the link. Even if you can't give, please share this with as many people as you can. Thanks in advance for your support!
