My quibble is with the word "torture." The practice of water-boarding is not akin to any form of torture used by our enemies. Saddam Hussein's Iraq had beatings to the point of disfigurement, people losing body parts, people thrown into shredders, rape rooms, beheadings, threatening of family members, etc.

Anybody who wants to conflate waterboarding with real torture has no credibility IMO.

Agreed, our version of enhanced interrogation can be replicated on our own recruits during training exercises, and it sure does not cut it as torture. I think the author was talking about real torture, but under extreme circumstances.

I still have a problem with one side not playing by the rules. Why should we be bound? I am not saying it is right or wrong, but it does allow the door to be open and stepped through if need be.

We are not dealing with civilized nations in this conflict, the geneva convention does not apply. This would be a lot different if we were fighting a national army with rules and uniforms.

You mean "Should" I was not allowed to shoot anybody that was armed just because they were more than likely Taliban. We still play by the rules and nobody else has since WW1.

The question is really would you want to be judged by 12 or carried by six... if they can even identify your body parts after the bomb goes off.

Torture to gain life saving information in the moment it was needed?.. John McCain wouldn't agree because he was savagely tortured for simple information... i.e. identify this radio, who are your commanding officers? Where is your base of operations? But torture to immediately save, or potentially save my life, and everyone elses??? Where exactly is the question. Great thing about being Christian, I can pray for fogiveness... can't do that if I'm dead. To anyone responding to the opposite side of this, if that were your child, or your mother, would you want me to disassemble the prick with a plastic spoon or pray for a quick death?

Put my life or my families life in danger and I know you have information that you aren't giving up... I will throw my morals out the window to get the information I need and have a clear conscience immediately afterwards.

Watch the movie "Unthinkable". Military rule #1: If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Why is it that we apply morality to war? It's war! The very actions one must take to survive are somewhat A-moral. That said, good people who judge from a moral high ground are protected by men who are more skilled at violence than those whom their fighting. Don't demand success in defending our country from attacks, then limit those people to actually perform that job.

In the immortal words of Will Smith ala Independence Day: "Don't start nuttin, won't BE nuttin".
