Using the NSC as the next FF is a great idea. It's a wonderful hull, unlike the LCS, and it will greatly increase interoperability and reduce costs to use it...

DDG $1.8 Billion, NSC $650 Million (add 200 million for upgunning with a few SUW missiles). You could make FFG at 2:1 for the cost of 1 DDG and get more lower end mission capabilities that the DDGs are overkill on. It is also fully manned with half the crew compliment of a DDG and contains many of the same engineering and weapons systems in the fleet now.

The goal is a lighter, less expensive hull, isn't it? Burkes are pretty big, heavy and complex...

Size is not much different between the Hamilton Class and Burke Class, propulsion is more complicated with the CODAG versus just a straight Gas Turbine set up. If it is the spy and weapons system that worry you those could be removed to save the weight but why since it would have no capability then.
