In my opinion, this is an excellent display of skills and technique on the part of the Detective Sergeant. He never had to use any of shady tactics to coerce a confession; he just allowed the suspect to talk himself into a hole, and eventually back himself into a wall of necessity to confess. Smyth did so without ever having to raise his voice. If you're not familiar with the case, the background will absolutely shock you.

I agree, it is a very effective technique. Unfortunately, I've seen the techniques horribly misused as well, where the Interviewer is too impatient, and they revert to literal television style antics. Ultimately it depends on the interviewer/Interrogator having the integrity to not allow their confirmation bias to overtake the interaction.
