My oldest son begins his police career tomorrow morning. I continue to hope that the American people will not allow news media, using the term loosely, to lead them against their protectors. The insanity must stop.

Maria Cutts - i would hope so as well. But the second part is whether after intervening to stop the beating, do you think he would report the offending officer ? Or contradict the officer when he put in his report that the suspect attacked him first if he didn't? And would he put his career at risk by testifying to that at a trial? There are well documented cases of an officer being blacklisted and ostracized by his fellow cops for breaking the code, even when he does the right thing.
Please don't take my questions as any attempt to question your son's integrity. I'm using him, as a brand new cop, as a stand in for what I believe is a major problem in trying to curb police brutality. The truth is that in the vast majority of these cases, the only witnesses are the bad cop, the suspect, and the other good cops. But due to their culture of having each others back, almost all the time the good cops, perhaps reluctantly, will become complicit in covering up for the bad cop. And therefore the bad cops are rarely held accountable for his actions. So I was interested in hearing what your son's thoughts were on this subject.

What is the price for one's soul? A job? A paycheck? Again, this is the value system of the individual. No one ever said that doing the right thing is easy. Sometimes, you may be the only one and punished for it. What is the nature of core values that erode under hardship? Were they truly core values?

SGT Damaso V Santana
LTC (Join to see) - Since you have a brother who had a long and safe LEO career, it would be interesting to know his take on the question you are asking. I believe it is premature to ask someone who has not been exposed to the "culture".

SGT Damaso V Santana - i know his take on the culture. It exists and has existed for decades. But he retired over 20 years ago. I was interested in seeing if a young man who is just about to join the active police force had already been exposed to or believes in that culture. That's why I asked the question. It will fall on his new generation of cops to either lead the solution or perpetuate the problem. It is very unlikely that many long serving veteran cops can change their culture now.

I cannot believe the depths we have lowered ourselves to as a society. As a society we have lost respect for human lives.
Matt: 21-26
Murder
21“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,a and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sisterb c will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’d is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
