All I knew of the Army before I enlisted was what I had read in Beetle Bailey comics or seen in propaganda movies churned out of Hollywood during WWII. None of it prepared me for reality. I wrote a journal and shared it on Smashwords free of charge so that others might not go blindly however the Army I joined and the one that exists today are likely two vastly different experiences. Thus, I suppose, it's an adventure that must be experienced for each of us in our own way.

CPT Jack Durish truer words have not been spoken, sir. The Air Force that even I joined 19 years ago is nothing like the Air Force today.
My only experience with the Air Force was what my dad & uncle had told me. Which was Vietnam-era.

Parris Island got your attention very quickly. I knew little about the Marine Corps when I arrived there. I thought I was in real trouble from the word go. No one pooped for a while. We ate too little and PT's too hard to generate much waste. Head calls were usually short and infrequent. It was not always comfortable.

SGT Bryon Sergent I remember in boot our TI came in one night drunk as sin from one of the base bars. Threw up all over the head. He took pity on us & cleaned it himself, though.
