Commemorating the Confederacy's surrender to the Union

There was only one civilian casualty in the Battle for Appomattox Court House, a slave named Hannah Reynolds who was the subject of a play which is new to the festivities and celebration.

Reynolds was caught in a home in the midst of the Union and Confederate armies converging on the Lynchburg-Richmond Stage Road. She was hit in the arm by an artillery shell in the fighting on the day of Lee's surrender and treated by a Union surgeon, but died three days later.
'Wounded an enslaved woman and died emancipated. That is a big part of the story. So Hannah's story is in a way the story of the surrender,' said Price. "
