Sgt Kelli Mays Both the Exchange and Commissary wend down hill during the Clinton administration and IMO, never recovered. I don't shop there anymore, the prices are not competitive.

Sgt Kelli Mays We moved back from Germany last year. We lived off post but husband went to work on a little airfield and post called Illesheim, the families got pushed to the main installation about 30 miles away and the commissary there had to close even though retirees, and soldiers still needed it. The problem I experienced with commissaries is that often times some of the food they off is way out of date, spoiled. That can lead people to think that the quality is not great. We bought better food on the economy, but wasn't until the end of 2014 that the euro went down drastically and made a huge difference on the budget. But when I was a kid I remember Nellis AFB having an amazing commissary with good meat, and even better sales. And I know the commissary is especially helpful to the lower income military families and retirees.

The commissary has become less competitive over the past decades; however, it is still very competitive for dairy and fresh meats in my area of Northern, Virginia Sgt Kelli Mays.
