Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that one day after the fall of Fort Henry on the Tennessee River, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of Rebel forces in the West, orders 15,000 reinforcements to Fort Donelson.
Of course this would be all for naught as General Ulysses S. Grant led his forces to gain crucial advantages by controlling parts of the major rivers in the upper South.

TSgt Joe C.: Some Confederates refused to surrender and departed Fort Donaldson in the teeth of a raging snowstorm. They were led by then Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest, who is said to have stated "I would rather my bones to bleach on the hillside than to go to a Yankee prison." Mort Kunstler captures this bit of history in his print "Ghost Column" (one of my favorites). Thanks for the post.
