They were asking/protesting in 1775 with the promise of taking up arms.
A year later they were prepared to deal with the consequences and told the King the colonies were no longer his.

“to die free men rather than live as slaves.” Uh huh . . . while enslaving people. No doubt many recognized the hypocrisy of that - the economic dependence on slavery, cruelty of denial of equal humanity . . . or the Civil War would not have manifested less than a century later.
