Shouldn't mission drive such programs? Maybe we should look to the Navy/Marine relationship to guide such decisions. Marines fly Marine aircraft in close support of Marine missions. What's wrong with Army pilots flying Army aircraft in close support of Army missions? Then let the mission requirements of each close support role define the needs for equipment.

The Army tried such a thing after the Korean War then the Air Force, afraid for the possibility of loosing funds, developed interest and came up with the A-10. There’s more into it but I’ll end up writing a while dissertation.

Isn't Special Operations Command a Joint Service command? Therefore they could continue to use Air force Pilots but the aircraft would be SoComm assets? So it wouldn't technically be the Army flying the planes, but SoComm? Just like they AC130 Gun Ships.
