As a public health issue that affects interstate commerce, it is relevant and wise for the federal government to provide via legislation aid to states and localities engaged in treating COVID-19 patients. It is in the public interest.
Individual healthcare for issues that are not public health threats are not (at least in my opinion) in the public interest, although I think reasonable people can disagree.
That the author can't tell the difference between the two and equates them together is interesting.
I think what most conservatives have a problem with in the Universal Health Care proposals is the elimination of choice (if you like your health care, you can't keep it) and the gigantic cost and corresponding tax hikes.
When someone comes up with a decent idea, I'll consider it. But Bernie-care is DOA.

This is a tough line to draw, for me. Clearly, there is a commerce issue with COVID-19, but when does a medical event become a commerce issue? Where would that line be drawn?

PO1 (Join to see) - I think that is why we have a Chief Executive - to decide things like that.
If things get to the point where shipping and ground transport get affected, I think Congress should weigh in with supportive legislation.

Medical issues are part of the national defense mandate in the Constitution. The issue is not socialized medical care, it is can everyone have access to the medical care needed at the time it is needed. The reason why medicare and medicaid work well in the States is that it is NOT socialized medical care. It is health care provided by the private sector paid by the government.
Some of you will ask, what is the difference?
When you have socialized care, you have medical professionals that become indifferent to a person's medical issues. Why this happens is because no matter what you do, you are not compensated differently and over time the whole hospital or clinic suffers due to thousands of little decisions.
So it is important that America always keep a classical private care system, even if there is a government payer.

SPC Martin Wiesiolek - Centralized single payer health care is not required to address COVID19 or any other virus. If COVID19 ever became a national security threat, no one would be asking for insurance as FEMA and CDC set up quarantines and eventually, vaccines. Socialized medicine would be slower to develop a vaccine than the free market, and many more would die.

SPC Martin Wiesiolek - Every city/state has free medical care There are several places here in San Antonio that people without insurance can go to for Medical care...and as for Virus's A person can go to any Medical facility to get tested. They will NOT get turned away...and if they test positive, they'll be whisked away to containment. Basically MEDICAID is for people who are not working or make very little money and do not have insurance. Between Medicare and Medicaid, I believe we have it covered....and not thanks to Obamacare.

SPC Martin Wiesiolek - People without documentation are not turned away from ER/ED's Very negative views...which may be true, but I would think, especially with the Coronavirus, that these folks you mention would rather go to the ER/ED and get checked out then not go...furthermore, I doubt they work 7 days a week 24 hours a day. The ED/ER is open 24

The leaders of other nations come to the US for health care when their lives are at risk and they require the most advanced lifesaving possible. The advances we have made in medicine would not have been incentivized under socialized medicine like they have been under the free market. The brightest minds of any free nation get to CHOOSE what they will do with their talents. Socialized medicine will pay doctors (and all other health care workers) 30% less than today, just to keep costs climbing at the same rate they are now. Many of the best and brightest pre-meds will make new choices and select a different career field if the federal government controls doctors' lives and paychecks. Single payer (federalized) medicine is a rock-stupid idea. It ensures we will get mediocre talent and long lines.
