Merle Haggard was to me the definitive C&W artist. He had lived the life he sang about, and many people identified with it. That's back when country music was about life (prison, drinking, trains, cheating, love, pickup trucks and Momma), rather than the syrupy "country" love songs one hears all the time today (and which remind me of 70s rock).
