When you can change the definitions of the metrics, they don't carry the same weight. Reality is what it is regardless of how you color it. Just another result of the softer coddling culture that has grown across the country

I'll admit to not having taken my own advice when I heard allegations about the MPD leadership miscategorizing incidents to affect the statistics. I only performed a very cursory look into the details of the allegations and saw that the D.C. Police Union was accusing* leadership of fudging the numbers and/or downgrading incidents.

After reading this story, I dug deeper and found out that, in addition to this one, there have been multiple lawsuits, going back a number of years, against the MPD leadership by MPD officers where leadership was accused of the category fudging, downgrading, and deliberately misclassifying incidents.

I'm not convinced the motive being ideological though. More likely, if the allegations are true, the motives behind the reclassification are likely more self-serving, to include reducing the 'heat from above'.

COL Randall Cudworth - I agree. The fact that the cooked books are now being used by the mayor for political purposes doesn't mean cooking them in the first place was political. The police brass were just fabricating evidence of success.

They're not the only ones to do this. The Buffalo Public School system in New York's been doing this for several years. Richard Hy (known on YouTube/Facebook as Angry Cops) brought this issue up earlier this year because in addition to being one of us (National Guard DS) and a YouTuber he's also a Special Victims Unit detective in the Buffalo area, and the school system downplaying its actual crime rate and student victimizations has only made his job harder.
