Yes Jefferson Davis who was a former U.S. senator from Mississippi that served as U.S. secretary of war in the 1850s ,received word he had been selected president of the new Confederate States of America TSgt Joe C.
In May 1862, Union Brig Gen Jefferson C Davis [not directly related to the CSA president] was promoted to brigadier general and participated in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi. On September 29, 1862, Davis shot and killed Major General William "Bull" Nelson during an altercation in the lobby of the Galt House Hotel at Louisville.
