Way back in time, I became the XO of a tank battalion in Germany. The S3 was a major and had been in the job for over two years. He was senior to me … older than me … more experienced than me. Nonetheless, the battalion commander and the brigade commander recognized that he'd reached the pinnacle of his military career … and I got the coveted XO slot. I mention this simply because he could have been bitter and made my job a living hell … but instead he mentored me while doing a damn fine job as S3. While I appreciate "duffelblog humor" … in this case I'm not laughing. Every one of us reached the end of the road in our military progression … some voluntarily, some not. Even Dempsey.
