I think it is a loss for the country but Mattis did it correctly. He felt the gap on some policy decisions was too great and rather than disagree or work against the president, he resigned. That was the correct and professional move. What do I think the major issue was? I think it had more to do with NATO and other alliances. Mattis addressed that at length in his letter.

His letter's a very powerful statement, very well thought out and a strong argument for a more traditional view of foreign policy. I have a feeling that this has been sitting in his desk (in some form) for a while.
