When I landed in Saudi Arabia in January, 1991, my mind was not occupied by what kind, or whether, there would be a war memorial for us. It was on winning. The subject of war memorials does not concern me, except in passing when I read articles such as this. It's unlikely that I will ever see the memorial. I have relatives who live near DC, and my grandfather is buried in Arlington, but since my early childhood, I have been to DC only once. I congratulate those who worked so hard to bring this project to fruition. I congratulate those who served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, especially those with whom I served in the 1st Infantry Division. Perhaps, in some distant future, we will have no need for war memorials. But I think it more likely that we will run out of ground in DC on which to build war memorials. Duty First.
