Despite risks, US veterans reckon with joining Ukrainian war effort

I hope the best for those that decide to go knowing full well that there are issues. Russia has already said that foreign fighters would not be considered soldiers, but mercenaries, and would not be protected under humanitarian rules regarding the treatment of prisoners of war. Those unfortunate enough to be captured may also give Russia hostage bargaining chip, volunteers risk not only their own lives, but also drawing the United States into a direct conflict with Russia. It's a really tough question.
