Disneyland, Walt Disney’s metropolis of nostalgia, fantasy and futurism, opens on July 17, 1955. The $17 million theme park was built on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California, and soon brought in staggering profits. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 18 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.

I won a trip there in 1960 for signing up 25 new subscribers to the San Jose Mercury News. It included a night at the Long Beach Pier and a day at Knotts Berry Farm. Going house to house in East Palo Alto at night to do so is something I won't soon forget.

Remember watching the coverage on the Sunday Disney Show. It was 15 years old before I made it there, on our honeymoon. Being able to have a sit down dinner inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is still one of our greatest memories and why we still like Disneyland over Disney world
