Ironically though it was the Irish Catholics who were noted for their fighting spirit when the chips were down.
Also ironic in that New York City was quite a fun host for various volunteer units that passed through on their way to various areas of the South. My great-great grandpa passed through NYC where it was noted that many enlisted "outwitted and outflanked" the posted guards whose job was to enforce the integrity of the unit.
Some things never change.
