My wife is English and her dearly departed grandfather, Edward "Ted" Norris was one of the last men off of the beach. I would talk to him about it a lot. He enjoyed relaying the story. His most vivid recollection was praying for air support prior to leaving the beach. He heard a "growl" and looked up and saw a Spitfire. The pilot was outnumbered but jumped straight in to the Germans, shooting five down. The pilot was Stanford Tuck and he did actually become an ace in a day.

Ted was 17 and upon arriving back in England, his unit was so decimated from combat that rather than "repair and reequip", the unit was just broken up and everyone sent to other units. Ted ended up in the desert at El Alamein.

I'm going away for the weekend, but when I come back, I'll work on getting my computer savvy neighbor on board. He was a rear gunner on a B-24 bomber and flew raids over Iwo Jima.
