Grant was not a complicated man. Intelligent? Yes-complex; no. This is the same man who, as a younger officer in Mexico, was vehemently opposed to, and offended by the execution of Irish-Catholic "deserters" by the U.S. Army. This is also the same man who struggled to find his footing as a civilian after the Mexican-American War, and began his career during the Civil War in relative obscurity-rising rapidly owing to merit and fighting ability. As President, Grant was at the helm for some of the worst of the atrocities committed against the Native Americans...and also an outspoken advocate for their equal treatment as U.S. citizens. Having studied the man at length, I believe he was mostly a pragmatist; if he believed there was a threat from some sector...his first instincts were to counter it, as opposed to considering the further reaching implications of that action. By contrast, Lincoln was, in my opinion, a very complex man... possibly more complicated than intelligent. Lincoln would've understood the ramifications of simultaneously fighting a war to "set men free"...and endorsing an order that suppressed other men on the basis of race. Neither men's actions, as far as I'm concerned, allows us to fairly paint either as an anti-Semite, or a Zionist. What both did achieve, were some of the most seminal changes in how civil rights were viewed in the Americas in the late 19th Century. We mustn't forget that it wasn't just African slaves and Jewish refugees experiencing severe hatred and bigotry in the years proceeding the War...Irish, Italians, and Chinese were also heavily discriminated against, particularly in the industrial North, where they were viewed as competitors for employment and resources in rapidly overcrowding urban centers. To my mind, what Grant did later in his life bears witness to genuine regret...not just an attempt to "save face" over this order.
