Until private space companies can start exploring other planets, create a viable space station, contribute to science, and give it all away to the people for free, we still need NASA. I personally would like to see NASA relegated to just a regulatory agency for private space launches, with a branch for scientific space launches. Vandenburg can handle military launches so there is no need for NASA facilities for those allowing a reduction.

Free? Are you kidding? Free? Do you know what we're spending on NASA every year and for what? There is no more manned space program. Significant probes were launched years ago. We're just along for the ride now. Other nations are now launching probes because our govt funded programs cost too much. The only launch business returning to America is coming to private commercial launchers. If NASA ever launches a manned mission to Mars, they will be welcomed there by colonists sent by commercial programs. Oh, there is one program that NASA is charged with that I don't think any commercial space company will want: Making space accessible to Muslim theocracies.

By "free" I'm referring to the access to data. We are paying for the equipment through taxes, but the data itself is being released into the public domain free of charge to anyone who knows how to access it through various websites and requests.
