I've posted about this guy, Field Marshal Mackensen, before. He is fascinating, probably the best field commander in WWI, staunch monarchist and strong nationalist his whole life, initially very impressed by Hitler yet later considered by the Nazis for arrest, and ever impressive in his death's head hussar uniform, elements of which were borrowed by the panzer corp and the SS.
At the age of 95, in 1945, he stood at his front gate to meet the invading British troops and request they not steal his chickens. Quite a guy.
