Proprietary funds are exactly what we have been discussing the last few weeks. This article does a nice job outlining the reasons firms create them and conflicts of interest they create. Edward Jones puts itself out as the financial advisor for the average family. They look like they are in your corner. The questions I'd ask are: 1. Are you a fiduciary 100% of the time, or do you operate under the suitability standard at any time. 2. Will you sign the Fiduciary Oath. If the answer to either of these is no, then my advice is to run away.
