Here is the history behind this song: This song was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1969. It was the anti-war song for Viet Nam at the time. Originally it was performed by The Temptations but was never released since Motown thought it would alienate many of The Temptations' fans. Instead, it was re-recorded by Edwin Star and went to the top of the Billboard charts in 1970. It is still considered one of the best anti-war songs and has been performed by many singers since.
My good friend played this song endlessly after her brother was killed in Nam in late 1970. It was the one way she could get through the pain.

MCPO Roger Collins - Actually, that was the theme song to Viet Nam. Read We Gotta Get Outta This Place: The Soundtrack of the Viet Nam War by Craig Hansen Werner and Doug Bradley. Excellent book regarding the various soundtracks through a 16 year war and the evolution of rock & roll.
