The 4th phase is a wonderful idea. I didn't have that when I went through and left Parris Island with no clue on how to talk to regular Marines. I remember getting to Camp Geiger and guys were like, "This, recruit...er... Marine requests permission to make a head call". Then the squad leader would say "Just say you've got to piss". It was a tough transition.

Agree, but I don’t recall that problem in 1970 when we went straight to Geiger from PI for ITR.

Yep. I remember a senior instructor at Camp Geiger telling us we were Marines now, and no longer only allowed to do what our DI told us to do.
I'm dating myself, but he used a popular cigarette commercial to get his point across -- "Viceroy, the thinking man's cigarette". His farewell to us was to encourage us all to "Keep smoking those Viceroys and you'll be fine".

You nailed it George. Sounds like they just "officially" named what they'd been calling the last week all along. I was concerned before reading that it was some political CYA stuff due to social media etc etc. Thanks for sharing and take care. Will

Would rather a 4th phase that is essentially ITR... increase boot camp to 16 weeks with ITR as the final phase.

That works for me, too, but it couldn’t take place on PISC. Too small. MCRD SD could do it easy.

Yeah... no Mount Motherf*cker at PI... but there is all that unused acreage that used to be Paige Field all the way out to Elliots Beach

Like that idea as well. Like you say, lots of room out at E'Beach. Ranges not far away either. When Gen Gray came in as CMC they pushed warfighting hard and it got a lot of REMF types better prepared for all the live fire afterwards. Desert Storm and then a pause, and it's been "game on" since. Prior to that nobody in logistics but the old hands even thought about Rear Area Security. We started getting serious with gun teams and drills once we figured out the line units would not always be around to provide security. After the post-war drawdown there were even fewer Infantry units to go around so loggies had to get in the game out of survival. Then enemy doctrine highlighted their intent to exploit RAS and it got real.
