I first heard about Slovik after the war.... All the kids I had been hanging with were about to go into long pants.... We all believed Slovik earned his execution.... A few years later the Slovik story had developed some hic-ups … The issue had become clouded but as teenagers we still believed Slovik should have been executed....
Then I served starting in '64. The service wasn't anything I thought it should be.... I was a misfit from the word go... Was I like Slovik. I paid the price for my behavior but mine were infractions .... Slovik's was Capital.... I thought of him a lot... and I thought of Billy Budd, Henry Dana and John Galt... My opinions of Slovik's execution changed.... Was it necessary? Why was Billy Hayes imprisoned for selling drugs in a country that grows opium. (Midnight Express)
And now ….. how does one troop sell our secrets via the internet, stand trial and then is able to morph into a female... Now she is free to run for political office.... How does that happen ..
What would Slovik say about that.... And then Bowe Bergdahl deserted his post inside a war zone while serving in Afghanistan in order to make some political statement about the military... Or, was it a war zone... When was the last time the U.S. declared war on anyone before bombing the shit out of them... and can you desert from a war zone if war hasn't been declared.... anyway Bergdahl is free .......
Slovik got the short end of the stick...
This movie didn't bother me.... I watched the dirty Dozen while eating popcorn... The problem with this movie is that some of the troops are going to start thinking that free thought is part of the plan of the day. Some may even become attorneys... Do you want that to happen on your watch?

As I said, I of course appreciate your views, it was merely that one tries to take human sensibilities into account, that was my principal motivation for asking. I'm entirely aware the film is actually factually inaccurate in a few places, though by and large basically accurate, plus, the performances were generally hailed as pretty outstanding, for the most part. That being said, that film was merely the tip of the iceberg, in terms of what I'd REALLY found...so, as I'd asked, should I still keep going? I'd just wondered, as I'd found your insights esp. useful, many thanks. .
