A couple of things happened that were unmentioned by the article. The Venetians had a force in the port area amounting to roughly a third of the city defenders and their commander had conflicts with the Byzantines about strategy. As supplies ran low, some of the Venetian Galleases attempted to break out into open water but were defeated.
Later, a sortie from the outer defenses was launched to raid the Ottoman camp for supplies. Not only was the raid a failure, but the fools left the postern gate open in order to affect a swift retreat. An Ottoman Jannisary (converted Christians) commander noticed, and rushed the open gate with his men. With the defenses compromised, the Byzantines attempted to surrender, but at this point Mehmed wasn't having it and sacked the city.
