I'd rather be surrounded by folks who look like me, but don't think like me, than by folks who think like me but don't look like me. One group will move the ball forward regardless of circumstances, the other only has one path to travel

The author is trying to reframe the definition to meet his perceptions of what Conservatives believe. I haven't heard anyone object to ethnic studies, I have heard a lot of people, including myself object to what DEI has become on Campus. It's just a big stick to keep all the students and faculty in line with a certain ideology. Most Universities may not have ethnic studies, but just google a random University and add Diversity and Inclusion and see what come up.
My last year at the University was 1979, it did not have a problem with lack of diversity even then.
