Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that the XB-70 was the ultimate attempt to build bombers that flew higher and faster, hoping to soar above and beyond defenses (interceptors and missiles). Was it after this that we turned to evasive defenses such as lower and faster and then stealth?

CPT Jack Durish That would be my guess, as well, sir. But, I do believe a number of our current fleet of Go Fasts had been in development during the same period. I just don't buy that one crash caused the XB-70 programs demise. Heck, look at Chuck Yeager and the X-1 and other test birds in that program. Multiple failures and a crash or two in that program.

Doing some research it seems that while it was on the drawing board tec surpassed its defensive capability. It was designed to Fly high and fast to avoid interceptors, at initial design nothing could match what it was spose to do. When the Soviets designed Surface to Air Missiles it came in to doubt that it could avoid being shot down. So they started flying them low but this provided little improvement over the B52. In the 50's they also started developing ICBM's which made the concept of long range bombers obsolete for delivering Nukes. The USAF stopped pushing for it and in 61 it was canexed, It was turned in to a research project on long range high speed travel when the incident happened, With only 2 prototypes ever made they just shut it down.
