An interesting point is that you cannot have an ethics discussion without a standard for ethical behavior... Science used to seek the truth, that requires a focal point.

We have an issue when science & religion (or ethics) are considered to be mutually exclusive opposing views.

Sgt Wayne Wood - and in times like that I refer to your original question, "just because we can, does that mean we should?" That is the basis of any ethical dilemma and without a standard to measure against - more will be said than done.
I read it, at least in part...I understand the reasons, though I was surprised itmwss done inn the UK, I find the overall concept inevitable, certainly, though obvioislymalso quite troubling, from multiple other standpoints, both ethical as well!as moral, let alone any inevitable religious qualms...
