LTC Ivan Raiklin, Esq. - Personally, I believe this to be a sound leadership policy. Every service member should be able to demonstrate proficiency with land nav and other skills without the use of GPS or other electronic aids. Most electronics are not EMP hardened as they once were. I'm also not confident major network nodes would be safe from direct hostile cyber attacks. Technology can be a great force enhancement but we should know how to do tasks ourselves without electronic benefit.

This is the sort of thing that takes a lot of practice in different environments. I remember backing up and turning around on a couple night moves in the 80s-90s up at Ft Drum.

Speaking of which, navigating without NVGs can be challenging, too - especially in dusty conditions.
