RP Members are we vulnerable to hackers getting into our drones and turing them against the population? Your thoughts?
NASA today denied a group affiliated with the Anonymous hacking collective hacked one of the space agency’s drones. The government body said it also believes the 250GB of data the Anonsec crew said it had stolen through a lengthy compromise of the NASA network appeared to be information that was already public.
Anonsec took credit for a breach of NASA on Sunday, posting on Pastebin the data included 150GB of drone logs as well as names, emails and numbers for just over 2400 staff. The data is now hosted on a number of servers. The group also claimed to have acquired “semi-partial control” of a NASA drone during a flight over the Pacific, namely one of NASA’s two Northrop Grumman NOC +0.08% Global Hawk unmanned aircraft used for high-altitude, long-duration data collection.
But NASA disagreed, sending the following statement to FORBES: “Control of our Global Hawk aircraft was not compromised. NASA has no evidence to indicate the alleged hacked data are anything other than already publicly available data. NASA takes cybersecurity very seriously and will continue to fully investigate all of these allegations.”

What day is this? What is the moon phase? Is it an odd or even hour? Are the minute and second prime numbers? The response to this issue is going to be that variable. Yes and no. It depends. Whose technology is ascendant? I can well-imagine teenage hackers accessing hardened systems and the defenders of those systems locking them down tight just as quickly. Think of the old Mad Magazine Spy vs Spy comic strip. Sometimes one wins, then the other. Personally, if I were supervising the defenders, I'd make sure that drones had just enough self awareness to determine that it was time to return home or self-destruct rather than permit itself to be directed to act outside strictly defined parameters. If I were supervising the hackers, well.. I'm not saying.

Drones, cars, boats and ships. This list goes on and on I was listening just the other day to someone who hacked their car through the Wi-Fi. They were not able to control anything but the some of the less danger things like the radio and lights but you pose a very good question about a lot of items that are now connected to the WWW. So I would say it is a possibility it seems it could very well be.
