I've come to this show very late and am hooked. It's too late in my life to take up a new hobby, especially one as technical and demanding as bladesmithing. I'm still trying to become an adequate storyteller. However, I can live vicariously through the travails of those who compete on this show. More importantly, every episode adds to my storehouse of knowledge (that I draw upon to craft my stories). Interestingly, I chose a blade (a kukris) as the totem of my hero in my Nick Andrews spy series (two books published and two finished editing only waiting for the artist to finish the cover art). One of the most interesting aspects of the show are battles between experienced masters who tend to focus too often on the fit and finish of their weapons, and amateurs who focus on crafting weapons that fit the tests that will determine winners. Thus, amateurs sometimes defeat masters. There's a lesson in that for all of us...
