Forgotten audio formats: Wire recording

The father of one of my friends had a wire recorder and we kids were curious about it. We opened a spool and had wire everywhere. Watching us attempt to rewind it was like a Three Stooges comedy skit.

I remember a story my grandfather told me about while he was in college earning his electrical engineering degree in the late 40's right after WWII, but he wanted to do a project on magnetic tape for one of his classes, but the professor told him it was too experimental and he should do it on wire recording instead.

this is most interesting... I love the Older technology...
