Established October 26, 1848, at Davis Landing by Capt. J.H. La Motte, 1st U.S. Infantry, as Ringgold Barracks. Named in honor of Brevet Major David Ringgold, 4th U.S. Artillery, who died of wounds received at Palo Alto, May 8, 1846. Troops were withdrawn March 3, 1859. Reoccupied December 29, 1859. Abandoned in 1861. Reoccupied by U.S. troops in June 1865. General Robert E. Lee passed a few days here in 1856 and in 1860.

Those is a lot of history here and near the River and Gulf. A lot of it related to the Mexican American War and the civil war. Plus all of the history related to the activities of commerce on the River. Steam Powered River boats operated on the river until railroads were built on each side of the river. Sixty miles from Mission is South Padre Island which is one of the hottest spring break locations on the Gulf Coast. Not a good time to be there.

PO3 Michael James Rio Grande City has a Walmart, an H. E. B. and some great steak houses. I ma sure that Back in the day you pretty much ate what you killed.
