On August, 24, 49 BC, Julius Caesar's general Gaius Scribonius Curio is defeated in the Second Battle of the Bagradas River by the Numidians under Publius Attius Varus and King Juba of Numidia. Curio commits suicide to avoid capture. From the article:

Gaius Scribonius Curio was a Roman general and politician, and supporter of Julius Caesar during his fight against Pompey. He was a distinguished orator and was friends with Cicero.
Curio built the first Roman amphitheatre in honor of his grandfather.
In the run-up to the Roman Civil War between Caesar and Pompey, Curio supported Caesar, but also called for the two men to make peace. While fighting for Caesar he was sent to northern Africa in order to engage King Juba I of Numidia, a supporter of Pompey, in battle. He was defeated by Juba at the Second Battle of the Bagradas River on August 24, 49 BCE and was killed fighting after he declined to flee with his troops."
