I am not surprised at all that my old friend and USMA classmate who led the 75th Ranger Regiment in OIF, served as COCOM of SOCOM and now is COCOM of CENTCOM made a "secret" trip to Syria to check on his troops and make his own assessment of progress in organizing local Arab and Kurd fighters for what has been a slow campaign to push the Islamic State out of Syria SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
As a matter of fact I just returned from a fundraiser for an old friend of mine who was wounded in Vietnam as a marine. He is a Virginia state senator who went to Syria earlier this year to see how things were going on the ground. He was with US forces when he was seeing the province of Homs. He mentioned a woman who went there with the blessing of the Syrian government to check on the Christians in occupied territories.
The Sate Senator mentioned accompanying the Governor of Homs and his wife to a performance where he was shocked to see a image of a bloodied Christ carrying the ross on the way to his crucifixion behind the chorus singing in Arabic. He asked the wife if they were in a church and she said that it was an entertainment venue. He pointed out to us that Syria has more freedom of religion than we do.
