The article gets the history mostly accurate, but it’s conclusion is simply incorrect. Washington isn’t ‘sort of’ the only 6-star General.

His very posthumous promotion to General of the Armies made him senior in rank to Pershing. The rank insignia for General of the Armies is four gold stars. (Pershing chose this insignia). Four gold stars will always outrank any amount of silver stars.

Hypothetically if WW3 breaks out, and we start promoting 5stars again, there will inevitably be talk of the creation of a 6star rank. If that were to somehow ever happen, Pershing and Washington wouldn’t magically become 7stars. The would remain at 4 gold stars, General of the Armies. And that would remain senior to a hypothetical new 6star rank.

Washington isn’t our only 6star. He is our second 4gold Star. And by virtue of his promotion orders, he is, and shall forever be, senior in rank in that most senior rank.
