Maybe the secret ballot isn't such a great idea. Sure, it prevents voters from being "pressured" when they cast their ballots, but it also allows those who count the ballots to shade the results. No one seemed to object in colonial America when voters paraded before the local sheriff one by one and announced whom they were voting for and the clerks recorded their votes while the candidates offered their thanks.
