The President of Germany is largely a ceremonial position with no real power. It really does not matter to German politicians who holds that position. The Chancellor or PM has the real power.

I'm not sure that we will see any changes in Germany since Merkel is backing him, and he has worked for her in the past. He has spoken out against Trump, and England for leaving the EU. Time will tell...
