My theory on why something is always being patched (and I've written college papers on this) is: What are hackers going to devote their time to? Some program that has very widespread use, like Windows or Adobe Acrobat Reader, or something that has very limited use, like all the flavors of Linux?
Hackers devote their time to the popular systems, so that keeps the developers busy constantly writing patches for it.

PO1 John Miller - That's not a theory. It's more a debatable stance that can be very well supported by the top 25 CVE list. Since most software is shipped or downloaded to be able to use immediately, out of the box, most popular software - linux kernel, Ubuntu, Winblows, and OS X(which was #1 for 2015) all make the list.
Which is another reason I like options. I wonder why Foxit Reader isn't on the site, though.
